It is one of the most beautiful German palaces built on the spectacular island on the lake. It's linked by bridges to the mainland. For centuries the castle was the home of the dukes and grand dukes of Mecklenburg. Today it is as the residence of the local parliament. Legend tells of a ghost, Petermännchen ('Peterman'), who is believed to walk the hallways and resembles a cavalier in 17th-century dress. He is said to be only a few feet high and visible to a limited few. The castle can be visited with the pre-booked guided tour. Don't forget to walk in the unbelievable park of the palace.
Schwerin Cathedral was formerly a Roman Catholic cathedral as old as the city itself, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint John. It was built in Schwerin, North Germany, following the move here of the seat of the Bishopric of the Abodrites. The tall, 117-meter high tower can be seen from far away. It's one of the main landmarks of the area.
The Staatliches Museum Schwerin-Kunstsammlungen (State Art Museum) houses a vast collection of 17th-century Dutch paintings and German art from medieval and renaissance masters up to the present day. There are also a collection of Greek vases, a collection of Paintings of Jean-Baptiste Oudry, a collection of sculptures of Houdon, German 18th-century court paintings, and works by modern artists like Max Liebermann, Franz Stuck, Marcel Duchamp, etc. The Graphic cabinet houses rich collections of Dutch and German drawings and prints and a unique collection of colored graphics from the time of the GDR.
The Mecklenburg State Theatre seats 650 people and is used for the performance of plays, opera, musical theatre, and ballet. The complex also includes the State Museum and a 240-seat concert hall, now used for performances of chamber works.
St. Mary's Church or Marienkirche, on Ziegenmarkt, is an imposing 13th century Brick Gothic church. Inside there is a unique astronomical clock built in 1472 by Hans Düringer.
The remains of the old City Wall can be found in different areas of Rostok's old town. The traditional medieval fortification structure used to protect the rich Hanseatic city from the invasions.
Kröpeliner Straße is Rostok's main pedestrian street that begins at the historic Market square and runs east to the 14th-century Kröpeliner Tor, a former town gate. All Rostok's essential buildings can be found around this street, including the University and Town Hall. The structures of the street are colorful and feature different styles, like baroque, gothic, neo-classical, and others. The funny fountain called Zest for life (Brunnen der Lebensfreude) can be found in the middle of the street, in front of the University building.
Kröpeliner Tor is located in the east end of Kröpeliner Straße. It's one of the oldest remaining gates of Germany, dating to 1270. The observation spot on the top offers the magnificent panorama of the city center.
One of the most picturesque places in Rostock is the New Market Square, with the Town Hall. The square has preserved six original, carefully restored gable houses from the 15th and 16th centuries. The other historical homes in Hanseatic style that once bordered the square were destroyed in an Allied air-raid in 1942, and rebuilt in a simplified manner
