Ulko Tours organized a excellent and enjoyable 4 days tour for our group of 18 people which consists of elders and young children. They were quick in responding to our requests and could arrange everything for us without delay. We had also have a amazing guide, Mariana, who was very knowledgeable and informative about all the places in St. Petersburg, and always carry a smile on her face. The whole tour were well planned and on time. Restaurant and food choices were excellent too. We enjoyed every moment in the beautiful city of St. Petersburg except on the last day when we missed our train from St Petersburg to Moscow. But thanks to Elena's prompt arrangement that we could manage to go to Moscow by plane on the same day without messing up our travel plan. Elena actually bought the air tickets and waited for us at the airport before we arrived there! I would high recommend Ulko Tours to everyone.

We went on a Baltic cruise and were stopping 2 complete days in St-Petersburg. Shore excursions offered by the ship were very expensive and were not covering everything I wanted to see. I contacted Elena at Ulko Tours and provided her with a list of sites we wanted to visit with a minimal number of persons. Elena prepared a fantastic program with only 10 persons at a very reasonable price. We had an incredible guide; Diana and we were in safe hands with our driver. Diana was extremely knowledgeable and was very nice with all of us. Lunch was included in the 2 days tour and the choice of restaurants was classy and the meals were very good. A wonderful experience in a very beautiful city!! Ulko Tours was easy to work with, provided us with Tatiana, a very knowledgable and pleasant tour guide, and we saw and enjoyed so much in two days. She was extraordinarily well informed, and shared not only her extensive knowledge of the marvelous sites and museums, but gave us a fell for the Russian people. She handled our itinerary, which was intense, in a way that minimized crowds and lines. We had the Hermitage almost to ourselves! My wife, I and two friends had an absolutely fantastic tour of St. Petersburg on July 9th and 10th. Our visits to the Hermitage, Catherine Palace, Peterhoff, Peter and Paul Fortress,St. Isaacs Cathedral, the Church of the Spilt Blood,and the Grand Choral Synogogue were fantastic. Our tour guide, Marianna, was a fountain of knowledge and and could not have been better. Although I had been to St.Petersburg before on busines, I saw and learned a great deal more from Marianna. Our driver was also excellent.
I would highly recommend Ulko tours to anyone wanting to take a tour of St. Petersburgh.

I am 17 years old, and I traveled with my family on a Baltic Cruise. Our tour guide in St. Petersburg was wonderful. Diana was very knowledgable, professional, and very experienced. We had a wonderful time in St Petersburg and Moscow, both our guides were great and their knowledge of Russian history was faultless. Our party of six spent 3 intensive days in St. Petersburg, guided by Margarita Kabakchi of ULKO Tours. We were delighted with every aspect of the ULKO operation, especially our incredibly knowledgeable guide. Margarita responded to our greater-than-usual interest in arts and culture, to such an extent that by day 3 we were actually trying to stump her with a question, but she answered all (being Russian-born and a university professor helps, apparently). We had good tour-guide experiences in all the Baltic cities, but ULKO was the stand-out company. Based on our experience, everyone in our party would recommend ULKO without reservation.

We toured St. Petersburg with ULKO Tours for two solid, fun filled and lengthy days. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and made the places we stopped at more interesting for us. Russian born, she was extremely well versed in the English language and her Russian accent added to the flavor of our tour. There were 64 tourists in our group from a cruise that silicted Ulko Tours for our shore excursion in St Petersburg for 2days. Ulko tours give a blanket Visa to get to this awesome place. We were divided into 3 groups with tour guides and all of them are very knowledgable of the history of Russia, more so on the historical areas we went to, very accommodating, very cheerful, friendly, their professionalism is exceptional. The 2 experience drivers speak very little English but brought us to the structured itinerary of historical places safe and sound. Everybody in these 3 groups had a wonderful time, very delighted on the services and really appreciates the excellent jobs rendered by the staffs of Elena Ulko who is a woman of reliability as an owner/founder of this ULKO TOURS. Her organization is highly recommended to other friends and family members. it is not so easy to find words of thanking Elena Ulko and the three tour guides and 2 drivers she assigned to us. I just want to add to what my husband already said. We had a WONDERFUL time and it was due in large part to our delightful guide Diana. Our visit was so full of amazing sights, but one thing it didn't have was stress! Diana helped us circumvent long lines and made sure we saw everything on our wish list. Talking with others on the cruise ship later we found out that they saw very little because of the crowds. My wife and I very much enjoyed our two day tour with Helen of Ulko Tours in St. Petersburg. We are seasoned travellers and have very high expectations when we book a tour. Ulko met and exceeded our standards as we hit all the significant palaces, churches and other majoy sites. It was a hectic pace but our group of ten handled the walking. Helen got us into the Hermitage and other sites without long waits and had an encyclopedic knowledge of the art and historical sites and events. You may spend less for a tour but we more than got value and rewards for our investment with ULKO. They are a five star agency.

Our guide, Diana, and our driver, Sergey, were friendly and very professional. We highly recommend Ulko Tours. And, don't be intimidated by warnings that you won't be able to get off the ship without a visa or official ship's tour. You U.S. Passport and tour ticket issued by an authorized Russian tour company, such as Ulko, works just fine. Ours was the "GDT Intensive Tour" - you'll be hard pressed to find any other tour that offers so much of St. Petersburg for such a good price. Obviously we were all very happy we choose Ulko!

My husband and I just returned from a Baltic Cruise. After a lot of TripAdvisor and internet checking, we decided to go with Ulko Tours. I wrote several e-mails prior to making the reservations and Elena answered fast. We chose the Guaranteed Departure 2 days Intensive Tour. Maximum persons would be 16 but our group was only 4 persons (2 other passengers from the ship), so it was almost a private tour. With confirmation tickets and passports it was easy to get out of the ship. Tour guide Diana Ljung was excellent, professional,very knowledgeable and helpful. Driver did not speak English but was friendly and great. We are so happy that we chose Ulko Tours. Initially we were a little worried because it was an intensive tour and my husband has chronic back pain but we were able to see and partcipate in everything, we kept the group pace and the experience with ULKO was excellent. We recommend without any doubt. Passengers who went with cruise excursions paid a lot more and were in buses with a lot of people. Since our group was small, we were able to also save time. Our group of several couples began planning our trip to Moscow, the Golden Ring and St. Petersburg with Elena and her team at Ulko Tours more than a year ago. Our trip was tailored exactly to what we were looking for. Elena was extremely helpful and prompt in responding to our questions, concerns, and changes. She handled virtually all the logistics for the trip (other than our flights) including hotels, guides, drivers and buses, concert/ballet tickets, train from the GR to St. Petersburg, lunches, a number of our dinners, museums, and so on.

Your guide was efficient and strict to timetable. We saw all we wanted except in Hermitage - see below. There was a lack of human empathy from your guide and lack of respect for her group in our opinion. A little more warmth and sympathy for older people would have made the tour much better. I suggest at Hermitage, given its size and the time constraint, you would be better giving an introduction and overview to your party and let the individual members decide their own priorities in the museum by letting them go free after agreeing a time and meeting point for departure. Finally it would be good to give an idea of lunch format in advance and change it if the party want something different.

Marguerite was an excellent guide who left us with a fabulous impression of St. Petersburg. We enjoyed the visit to the Hermitage where we visited the French Impressionists and were impressed by all the churches, the synagogue, and the palaces. Elana arranged tours for 2 days that were outstanding. We were able to see everything we asked for. Also, we made changes as we went along and these were cheerfully accommodated. Elana solved a hotel problem even though she did not make our hotel reservations(would have her do the reservations next time.)

Yulia was our guide. She phenominal. my daughter-in-law said you could ask her any question and she knew the answer, she was an encyclopedia of information.

We chose Ulko Tours after checking out existing reviews on Tripadvisor and we could not have made a better choice. Our cruise ship was in St Petersburg for two days but we decided that we wanted to see all the main highlights in a single day and spend the other day just chilling. Ulko Tours provided a ready made tour on their website with exactly the right mix of sights to which we wanted to make an inside visit; St Peter's and St Paul's, the Hermitage and the Summer Palace at Pushkin Village. We also made brief photo stops at other key sights including St Saviour's on the Spilled Blood.

After we had spent an hour waiting in line for Russian passport control we were delighted to see the smiling face of Julia, our tour guide, waiting for us. Julia was simply fantastic and extemely well co-ordinated. Her spoken English was excellent and she made sure that we saw much more in our long day's tour than many of our fellow cruisers who had taken the cruise line's bus tour option saw in two days. Julia was great at saying "Just meet me over there to the right of the queue and we'll cut the line" and this always worked extremely well.

During the day we spent all our time looking at really interesting art and buildings and none of it waiting for our fellow passengers. We made up for the lost time in passport control and our comfortable Merecedes mini van cut through the St Petersburg traffic smoothly and swiftly. Whilst our tour was not particularly cheap, it did represent excellent value for money compared with the cost of cruise line excursions and we will have no hesitation in choosing Ulko Tours for a more leisurely look around St Petersburg the next time we take a Baltic cruise.

I contacted 4 tour companies. Yours was the most responsive to tailoring tours specifically for us. We also appreciate the effort somebody in your office put into finding a school where we could watch and photograph the Sept 1 opening of the school year. . .so different from here in the U.S.

We had a wonderful tour in St Petersburg. Diana did a great job and we saw a lot. My recommendation would be for more time in St Petersburg. There is so much to see and two days is not enough. we talked to some of the people off the ship and their tours were 40 people in a bus and 9 buses. Yikes!!! When we looked out the windows of the Hermitage we could see the other poor souls waiting in line. What a difference to be 8 people in a van , with a great and patient driver and an energetic , knowledgeable guide. Thanks!!

Our group of 13 was given an excellent tour of St Petersburg. We had a very charming and talented Tour Guide, Diana Ljung. She is not only knowledgeable, but also very friendly and caring to old tourist liki our group. She took time to wait on us and avoided crowded group by diverting us to less crowded areas. Our entire experience with Ulko Tours was EXCELLENT.

As cruise ship passengers who had previously spent 5 days in lovely St. Petersburg, we knew what we what we wanted to revisit but the ship's tours were very expensive and didn't meet our needs. A review of possibilities on the internet brought our attention to Ulko Tours.

The one-day moderate tour of St. Petersburg met our needs perfectly. All of our pre-departure inquiries were responded to promptly and we were reassured that the tourist visa which they would provide was sufficient in spite of the ship's warnings that we needed to be part of an organized tour (ie., their tour) to be able to visit St. Petersburg.

For 10 1/2 hours we were in the capable hands of our exuberant and knowledgeable guide, Marianna, and our professional driver.

After listening to our fellow cruise passengers, we felt our tour was much more 'indepth' and personal. Marianna efficiently slipped us through and around larger groups and her knowledge was amazing. Our trip to the Hermitage was exceptional because not only did we see the extraordinary highlights but also many of her favorites throughout the museum which we never would have known about.

Based on our positive experiences we highly recommend Ulko Tours and the wonderful Marianna.

We want to thank Elena Ulko (Tours) for her preparedness and extra care throughout our 10 day stay in Russia. We were most grateful for the very knowledgeable personal guides in her team for both Moscow and St. Petersburg. Where cars and drivers were used, they were most safe.
She especially used her contacts to arrange introductions for an art research project with translations of letters and phone calls for appointments. Without her guidance, the visit would have been most be difficult. The Moscow section guide, Elena, (a popular name in Russia, after St. Helena) was most helpful in relating as well to the everyday interests of my wife, and we wish her well. It was as if she was a long family friend. She was also helpful in my research, in pharmacies regarding smoking cessation. Director Elena Ulko, who is based at St. Petersburg, also accompanied us for the icon research in St. Petersburg. Her associate, Maria, is a walking Russian encyclopaedia, most planned and patient. She took our restrictions into account, and had a constant eye on the many traffic delays. Even being healthy older walkers, one could not see or cover what we did without someone liki Elena Ulko's guidance.
Less mobile visitors need to appreciate where Russia is at, God bless it, regarding disabled access in some of the historical sites. Similarly for persons affected by tobacco smoke. A personal guide will know what will work for individuals. Russia has been repeatedly to hell and back twice in the 20th century- it has left its mark on the people, and the processes and understandably, the lack of English, or such signs. It is wonderful to see how young people especially have grasped the new freedom, and is well expressed by the fashion of the girls. The Russians are a valiant people, and so is the restoration of the Orthodox faith and churches- unparalleled devotion and magnificence for all faiths. That is why someone to organise everything, maximise time and take out the worries is important, and Elena Ulko, spent much time beforehand assessing and adjusting to suit this client’s needs. Because of our distance, our visit was 10 days straight, however for those in Europe, I recommend Moscow and St Peterburg as separate trips, to reduce the risk of being overwhelmed by all the information. However, should you travel between the two cities, the TGV- liki Sapsan train was excellent. To avoid mishaps or surprises, the pre-arranged transfers with Ulko tours or your hotel take out any hassles.
The resurrection of the magnificent Christian Orthodox churches, the unbelievable color and impression of the Byzantine art and spiritualism depicted in each church is spellbinding. So is the surviving reverence and devoutness of the queues of worshippers at each church. A day tour out of Moscow to St Sergius Pasad complex of churches and monastery is a must. Similarly for the restored palaces, in St. Petersburg, and the art of the greats at the Hermitage is unsurpassed. We were asked to carry our permits and copies of passport, but were never asked. We were told that, if asked, one needs to be sure that they are genuine police. One thing we learnt in a wide European trip of flights is to watch and follow your luggage as it joins the carousel. Anybody can pick it up.

Our family of 4, my husband and 2 teenage kids (18 and 15), had the most amazing time in St. Petersburg. We took the 12 hour tour with Alex, whom was a delight to spend the day with. Since we booked with ULKO Tours we were able to get into all of the attractions ahead of the cruise ship group line ups, because of this we were able to see more of St. Petersburg than you would if you booked threw the cruise lines themselves. We did not need a visa before we left as the cruise lines will tell you. Elena was more than helpful in her e-mails. We had the best time ever and wish to thank Alexander and Elena so very much.

Being in a small group, you can move around with greater flexibility and able to see more and learn more. Must try the famous Russian borscht and some local dishes in local restaurant. We had the most incredible tour in St. Petersburg. Elena and her team set up a tour exactly as we had requested. The guide, driver, and van were better than expected. We encountered a formula 1 event behind the red square and we wanted to stop and ask what it was and her answe was: since I'm not interested in this events I don't know what it is. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to St. Petersburg. We traveled to Russia by cruise ship, but silicted Ulko as a much more economical way of seeing the sites in St. Petersburg than by doing it on the tour sponsored by the cruise line. In comparing notes with our fellow passengers who took the ship's tour, we saw everything they did...and more, at great savings. Our tour guide, Luba, was friendly, patient, knowledgeable, agreeable, pleasant, and worked extremely hard to make sure we saw everything but also understood the history behind it. Being in a more intimate group of 6 people made it easier to hear and understand. Our driver was very skilled in getting us around the city, especially at the more heavily trafficked areas. All in all, I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the city, especially for the first time. I would HIGHLY recommend Ulko Tours for anyone visiting St. Petersburg.

Four well travel Adults, booked with Ulko based on the reviews and we were not disappointed.

The booking process was fantastic! We sent several emails and Elena & her staff were quick to respond and thorough will all the necessary details. We were in St Pete 3 days and we asked to customize the 3 day deluxe tour that is on her site. A few emails later and we customized our extensive and exhaustive (self-imposed) 31 hr, 3 day tour. Info on the details, payments as well as blanket visa requirements were all covered by Ulko in detail.

Elena was scheduled to tour us personally even though she has many guides working for her. However at the last minute she had an emergency and rescheduled us with Katya (Katherine). I have read how fantastic Elena is in other reviews, so now let me tell everyone about Katya. WHAT A FANTASTIC GUIDE - SHE COULDN'T HAVE BEEN ANY BETTER!

Knowledge - incredible, it took 4 of us (asking many questions) until day 2 to stump her on something obscure!

Personal Style - professional but open to many questions and occasional jokes. Very concerned with customer satisfaction. Delivers narratives in pleasant non-monotone style, not at all boring.

English - fantastic! Not only was she clearly and easily understandable, she also never once in 31 hours said "how do you say..." which occasionally is quite normal for a guide, but not Katya - top notch english!

Pricing can be considered higher than some other tour operations, not by much however and you definitely get what you paid for - and more! St. Pete is not a place to settle for a tour company of lesser quality!

In June our cruise ship stopped overnight in St Petersburg. As most will know there are virtually only two ways to get entry to this Russian city for trips. Either DIY (the hard way) or go through an approved Agent, which we did. We did a fair bit of research prior to the trip and chose ULKO Tours. Our choice was the right one – they were terrific from start (pre-cruise) to finish.

Elena organised everything pre-trip so precisely for the full day trip we chose, by arranging the Visa entries and other paperwork, as well as giving us some guidance on what type of clothing that may be necessary

On arrival at the brand new liner terminal we were met by Katya and our driver and taken to a virtually new vehicle with individual seats for the four of us. We had expected to be in with others, but not so – this was a very individual and private trip for four.

Although lasting nine hours the trip seemed to fly by. Katya’s knowledge was absolutely superb and she also knew all the angles to slide us by the large crowds that seemed to be everywhere

All told we had a terrific day in St Petersburg and would have no hesitation in recommending ULKO tours to anyone else looking for a travel guide in the city.

What an amazing trip. My husband had business in St. Petersburg and Moscow so our time in Russia was very limited but boy did Ulko tours come through for us. Our guide, Natalya in St.Petersburg was prompt and boy did she know her Russian history. She also had tickets in hand so we did not have to stand in the queue (as they say in Europe) so we went right in to all the exhibits. Our transfers were easy and the drivers were also very prompt. Our tour guide in Moscow, Maria, made sure that we were on schedule so that I would not miss a thing..right on schedule to see the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider very impressive. WOW! Our tour in St. Petersburg was amazing! Our tour guide Diana was the best. She was always on time and had a smile on her face for the three days we toured with her. We definitely enjoyed our experience in St Petersburg and feel that we saw much more than possible thru ship-board tours. The price was comparable when you compare all that we were able to see.

The car was in excellent condition and the driver did a good job. He was always on time and waited patiently for us as we visited the sites.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided a great deal of information. Her English was pretty good -0 a bit difficult to understand at times but very acceptable. She obviously knows a great deal about the sites and their history. There were times when she would start talking and not pause for questions. We felt that we were interrupting if we tried to ask questions. She also lacked enthusiasm for the subject and tended to be very dry. I was surprised to learn that she also guides for several other companies. Sounded liki an on-call status.

An absolutely fabulous two days in St Petersburg. We normally travel independently, but with the huge Economic forum in the city and possible language issues, we opted for a guide to help us get around. It was a great experience.

Our guides, Diana and Katya were amazingly well-informed, interesting, and immediately divined what we were interested in and tailored their information to what we wanted -- we really enjoyed the history lessons and insight into Russian life from both of them.

Elena was incredibly helpful in getting things set up for our visit, with hotel recommendations and suggested sites to see, and was very responsive and patient with all of our questions. I knew from her initial emails that our choice to go with Ulko was the right one -- she immediately understood what we wanted and explained how she could provide it.

And she delivered on everything. Our driver for both airport transfers and our day at the palaces was prompt and nice, and our guides for each day were waiting for us in the hotel when we came down and were organized and had a clear plan for the day. When we unexpectedly shifted our plan on the second day (since we had gone to one of the sites on our own the previous evening), Katya was unfazed and simply readjusted as we headed off to see other areas of the city.

We are very, very happy with our experience with Ulko tours in St Petersburg and recommend them wholeheartedly for anyone visiting this amazing city.

Our guide, Luba, was excellent. She was incredibly knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions on a variety of topics. We enjoyed our 2 days with her and felt that we had truly gotten a bit of a Russian perspective, not an easy thing to do in a country where many people do not speak much English. I was skeptical at first to book an independent tour verses the ship's, but signing up with Elena with Ulko tours turned out to be the best part of the trip. Our guide was excellent, very knowledgeable, spoke perfect english, and took our minute changes with a stride, always with a smile, making sure we were always happy and coming up with great alternatives.
The driver was excellent as well, driving cautiously in the congested streets and was always on time to meet us. We were 3 adults traveling, and we had a luxurious, immaculately clean mini van. We always had a cold bottle of water by our seats and our guide sat in the front with a loudspeaker.
Our guide was right on time waiting for us as soon as we left Russia's immigration holding a sign with our names. Our cruise line had left a telephone message at our house prior to our departure from the US reminding us to be sure to book the Russian trip through them, to ensure we would not have a problem.....It was such a pleasure to have Elena take care of our trip and itinerary. We bombarded Elena with questions via email prior to our departure, and they were all answered immediately.
My sister and her family is embarking next week on her cruise. After listening to all of my accolades, she went and signed up with Ulko.

We just returned from a 12 day cruise to the Baltic, which included a 2-day stop in St. Petersburg. Before leaving the U.S., we did substantial internet research in order to find the best private 2-day St. Petersburg tour. We settled on 3 different companies, including Ulko Tours. We then sent identical emails to all 3. Within less than an hour, we received a very personal response from Elena, not a canned or form reply. (We didn't hear from either of the other 2 companies for more than 24 hours). That sold us on Ulko.

As we planned our tour with Elena, we sent her several inquiries, all of which were almost immediately replied to by her in a complete and professional manner. We were convinced by both our research and our communications with Elena, that our St. Petersburg tour would be a memorable experience, and we were not disappointed.

Upon our arrival, our guide, Luba, met us at the cruise terminal, and we then began our tour. Luba was very knowledgeable and informative and gave us great insight into the history and culture of St. Petersburg. Luba was very flexible with our itinerary and freely and openly discussed even the personal questions we posed to her about her life in St. Petersburg. She treated us liki friends visiting her city for the first time, not just tourists.

Our driver, Anatoli, maneuvered through the difficult and often crowded traffic liki a seasoned race car driver.

We normally travel independently, but after reading so much about Ulko Tours we decided to contact Elena for our trip to St. Petersburg and Moscow. One of the best travel decisions we ever made!

My husband & I had a wonderful holiday in Russia during Easter. We were lucky that we had found Elena to arrange the trip for us in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Elena replied to our queries promptly and precisely every time no matter how minor they were. Our guides in two cities, Svetlana and Alexandra, were professional and knowledgable. When we visited museum and palace, it seemed liki we were taking a history lesson. Elena helped to order circus tickets for us in St. Petersburg without charging any additional fee and prepaid for us. The driver in Moscow, so sorry I forgot his name, was flexible and helpful. As we found there was traffic in Moscow during our stay, we requested to leave for the airport earlier than the original time in order to ensure we could catch our flight back home. The driver was on standby around our hotel area that day waiting for our return from the last sightseeing place then set off for the airport.
I would definitely recommend Ulko Tours to my friends.

We visited St-Petersburg in April 2011 and made the choice to select a tour guide during our stay in the city. Choosing a guide from Internet brings a little apprehension and we choose Elena Ulko’s agency based on the numerous positive feedbacks found on the web.

From the very first contact with Elena, things started to get moving and preparing the trip to Russia was much simpler. Elena recommended a very nice hotel and organized our detailed visit agenda during our stay.

Upon our arrival, our driver Andrey, always very friendly and helpful took us to our hotel. The next morning our tour guide Luba was waiting for us and we started our guided tour. Luba was very knowledgeable and shared with us many details and information over the city’s history, buildings and off course art masterpieces that you will never learn, should you visit these places on your own. In addition, visiting the city with Luba gave us this feeling that we were not tourists, but visitors discovering with our private guide this exceptional city.

Just back from a superb eight day visit to Moscow and St. Petersburg. Elena organised all the guiding and sight seeing in both cities most efficently and courteously. All e-mails and queries were answered immediately and fully. The two drivers, one in each city, were by far the best and safest two drivers we encountered! Elena's knowledge of the museums, churches, palaces and their treasures was superb, as was Alexandra's in Moscow. We finished with a performance of 'Cinderella' at the Mariinsky which was truly magical. A really great experience, due in large part to Elena and her team. A very great thank you to them all. We would unhesitatingly recommend Elena and Alexandra to all our friends when they visit these cities.
An extra tip. Visit 'out of season' when there are no queues and you can take as long as you liki at all the special sites. (and there are a lot of them)

My husband and I visited St. Peterburg and Moscow for the first time in August, 2010, and feel SO fortunate to have found Elena ("Lena") Ulko prior to the trip. We are normally very self-sufficient travelers, but would have missed out on so much had we passed up the professional services offered by Ulko Tours.

Lena offered us plenty of suggestions for planning our trip, including setting us up with a guide she knows in Moscow. She was prompt and professional in answering all of our pre-trip emails (and there were many!). Her expertise about Russian art and history made our visits to the Hermitage and Petershof especially memorable.

But perhaps what made our trip most special of all was Lena herself. She was able to accommodate our somewhat unusual request to visit a local orphanage near St. Petersburg, and were very touched to learn that Lena and her husband, Vadim, are regular supporters. We not only had a wonderful trip, but feel liki we have made new friends.

I also feel we were able to see much more of St. Petersburg in a short period of time than the average person who has only a few days in the city. Although we were not on a cruise for this trip, we are past Crystal and Silversea passengers who are familiar with the typical excursions offered on these lines. If you are passing through St. Pete's on a cruise, I would urge you to sign up with Lena and Ulko Tours if you want an experience that will be far more personal and customized than what the cruise ships typically offer.

It is hard to believe that we have been home for more than a week now. We arrived to quite warm weather, although it has cooled down in the last couple of days. And, of course, air conditioning is common here so the heat is more bearable.

We have read that the heat continues for you, and that there was a big storm recently. I hope you were not trying to guide a group around during that sort of weather.

Thanks again for making our visit to St Petersburg so nice. The visit to the Hermitage with Anya worked out well - I didn't anticipate that we would have an art history lesson as well as getting to see so much of the building! Unfortunately, 3 hours is the maximum that one has energy for such a visit; I know there is much more to see and absorb.

Hi Elena

It took us a while to return to our routine after our holiday in Russia so this is the fist time we could find to sit down and write to you.

Eventually it took us quite a while to finally get back to South Africa because our flight from Moscow was cancelled. Emirates bussed us all the way back to Moscow to the fancy Milan hotel and only flew us out the next day! So we had to go through that terrible immigration twice and the second time they were very suspicious about us already having an exit stamp. We almost never got back to South Africa. The next night we had to sleep over in Dubai also at Emirates cost before being back in SA.

Thank you so much for you guidance in St Petersburg. It was a true memorable experience. You live in a really interesting and truly grand city. We hope too see it again one day. You were really a professional and very knowledgeable host. You made everything so easy and interesting for us. Even if it was a short visit it was amazing to see the Winter Palace with you.

I particularly enjoyed the outing to Puskin. Seeing the Dutch Reformed church and the places the Boer soldiers must have seen in 1901 was something my father would have been very interested in. Please write and stay in touch. Should you ever need references we will gladly help.

My husband and I recently returned from a wonderful and most interesting two week vacation in Russia.

During our trip, we visited St. Petersburg where we had the delightful experience of having Elena Ulko as a tour guide. It was obvious before we even left our home state of California in the United States, that Elena would be responsive to our interests and needs. With great patience and efficiency we corresponded 20 times! This ongoing communication was not only to work out the business aspects and our itinerary, but included her answering my many queries about travel in Russia, what to bring, wear, and so many other thing one might ask when going to a country where they are unfamiliar with the language and customs.

With kindness, an upbeat attitude, and an understanding of what it is like to travel aboard (from her own personal experiences), she was there to reassure and make the trip a positive experience. As soon as we met Elena at our hotel, I felt welcomed and knew that this would be a memorable time. She tailored our touring to our interests, requests, schedule and pace.

Her skill at improvising was most welcome at once when we got caught in a sudden wind and rain storm, she quickly got us inside while she found us transportation to our next stop. She took good care of us, being very flexible.

And she is totally proficient in English! In addition, when we wanted to purchase a Cyrillic keyboard for our collegiate son, she recommended the stick-on overlays and even picked it up for us. Knowledgeable, forthright, warm, and funny, we learned a lot about history, art, and culture while laughing and feeling relaxed.

And even though we hired her for only 3 days out of our 6 in St. Petersburg, she assured us that we could handle the rest on our own and advised us on what other sites to see, how to travel to them, time schedules, where to pick up tickets for foreigners, and gave us names of restaurants that fit into our budget.

Lena and I emailed for several months setting up every detail of our October 2006 trip to St. Petersburg.

Dear Lena,

My husband and I have returned from Saint Petersburg and I would like to tell you what a marvelous time we had. From the very beginning, this trip was more of a pilgrimage than anything else and when I told you I "stumbled" on to your website, I really knew in my heart that that action was an answer to prayer. We were not going to Russia just to see the sights and look at pretty palaces. We were going on a journey that was spiritual and I needed just the right guide to help us on that path. When Lena began corresponding with me, it became apparent that she was the person to take us on our journey. I don't think she even yet knows what it was that made me know she was the one, but there was one line in her correspondence that made me know "she got it" and directly or indirectly knew what we were about and why we were coming there.
As we had discussed prior to the trip, my husband and I would have already spent more than 3 weeks traveling in Europe before we actually came to Saint Petersburg. Had we had a guide that only took us around and did not interact with us, it would have made the end of our trip nice, but not special.

We spent four marvelous days with Lena and she mapped out our daily programs well to fit our desires, actually leaving the most important things until the very end. I do not really know why she chose to take us to Saint Trinity Monastery for church on Sunday morning except that she likes the choir there, but what she didn't know was that I have a nine year old grandson who has really been struggling and Saint Alexander Nevsky is his patron saint. Since that is who is buried at that monastery, I was able to light a candle and pray for my grandson there. It was a moving experience and one that I will remember always.

The main reason for our trip was to visit the Smolensk cemetery to visit the tomb and chapel of Saint Xenia and that was the next thing on our agenda after the church service. That was an experience of a lifetime and just knowing that Lena was taking us and understood the reason why I needed to go there was very special, to say the least. But the next part of the day was the big surprise. Lena had invited us to come to her home for dinner and we were so honored. We could not believe how it touched us to be in her home and meet her family and interact with them. There are no words to describe our feelings as we left these people we had never met, and yet, after one evening together we felt we had made friends with them and had shared a little piece of their lives. It was a priceless experience and one of those moments in time that you know can never be repeated but will live with you always.
Lena was wonderful and Andrei was incredibly polite and sweet. He is a very humble man and very enjoyable.
Please know, that if I ever have the opportunity to recommend your services to anyone traveling to Russia, I will. It was well worth our money to have both Lena and Andrei.

You will remain a friend for the rest of my life and I hope to stay in touch with you always. If you ever have the chance to come to the states I would love to have you visit in my home. You are a gem. It was a pleasure doing business with you.

What a pleasure it was to spend the better part of 3 days with Lena Ulko as our personal guide in St. Petersburg, Russia during White Nights season in June 2005.

Lena spoke perfect English and was extremely knowledgeable about Russian art, architecture and history. She was a lively and charming person to be with and we were very reluctant to leave St. Petersburg, and Lena in particular.

We have been privileged to have had some superb guides during more than 50 years of travel to some of the most exotic and difficult places for tourists to visit throughout the world. Lena is at the head of the class in this regard.

Prior to our trip, we had three months of extensive email correspondence with Lena about our interests. Given the time constraints of less than 3 days at our disposal, she did a superb job of avoiding the throngs at all the attractions during the height of the St. Petersburg tourist season or getting us through them easily when necessary... and covering all the ground we planned to cover.

How can anyone possibly know as many special routes to the best toilets in the massive Hermitage while almost everyone else had to stand in long lines to visit the lesser-quality ones? Don't laugh... this is more important than it may seem to you if you've never been there before.

Amazingly, Lena was eight months pregnant when she first started corresponding with us, had her beautiful, healthy Diana a month later and was spending long days touring with us just two months after that.

Our only regret... not spending more than three days in St. Petersburg with her.

For three days this summer, we had the pleasure of being in St. Petersburg with our guide, Elena Morozova. We certainly were in capable hands for she not only was knowledgeable about all of our sites, but was a terrific help when we went to visit an artist whose work we had viewed in Santa Fe.

We felt that all the time we spent together was both fun and informative. In fact, we feel that we have made a friend for life. Our only regret was that we could not witness her wedding, but she has promised to send us pictures.

Her English was exceptional. My only regret is that we could not find my sweatshirt. (She would know what I mean).

Finally, we would recommend her to anyone who wants a friendly and informative guide.
